Fuel Tank

Fuel Tank

Malfunction of the fuel tank

  • cracks and holes in the tank body;
  • failure of the ventilation system;
  • damage to the fuel supply valve;
  • clogging of the fuel line;
  • roll over valve malfunction;
  • malfunction of the fuel vapor recovery system;
  • corrosion (in metal tanks).
Symptoms of the fuel tank failure
  • deterioration of the engine performance;
  • reduction in maximum power of the car;
  • a significant increase in fuel consumption;
  • smell of fuel in the cabin;
  • interruptions in he engine cycles t at low speeds;
  • jerks while driving;
  • fuel smudges on the tank and underneath the car.
Causes of the fuel tank malfunctions
  • ingress of water, mud or other substances into the tank;
  • hitting in crashes or accidents;
  • use of low-quality fuel;
  • condensate formation;
  • damage to the gaskets;
  • system leakage.
Diagnostics

Visual tank inspection will determine leaks and damage to the fuel tank. If you find traces of fuel, you should immediately carry out repair work. Also, the pressure is measured in the tank. Its optimum value should be viewed in the technical documentation of the vehicle. At low or no pressure you need to check the tank ventilation system.

The roll over valve should close when tilted more than 45 degrees. This is to prevent failures of the engine cycles in the absence of fuel supply and subsequent malfunctions.

Repair of the fuel tank

Repairs can be made for minor mechanical damages to the tank. All work must be carried out in a well-ventilated area. Character of repairs depends on the material from which the tank is made.

For metal constructions hot and cold welding methods are used. State of welds must be checked regularlly to prevent recurrence of failure.

Damages to plastic fuel tanks are easier to repair, but it is a temporary measure. Cracks can be eliminated using epoxy resin or by soldering plastic.

Removal of water from the fuel tank can be done without dismounting it. To do this, fill the tank with a special liquid to remove moisture or 300-500 milliliters of pure alcohol.

Replacement of the fuel tank

Installation of a new fuel tank is a difficult task, so it must be carried out only at a service station. It is important to know that you can only disconnect a clean tank with no traces of gasoline and its vapors.

Disconnect the fuel lines and hoses, and then the ventilation hose clamp. Then it is necessary to disconnect the tank mounts and remove it. It requires efforts of several people.
